Information about certifying as a
US Soccer Federation (USSF) referee
and as a
NC High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) referee

Below you will find information regarding soccer officiating.  Darren Dawson is the referee assignor for USSF youth matches in Greenville, Washington and Kinston, and the NCHSAA referee booking agent for most high schools, middle schools and private schools in Pitt, Beaufort, Lenoir, Greene, Wayne, and some of Wilson County.  Darren's contact information is:

USSF referee.  A USSF referee typically officiates youth challenge and classic matches from U-9 to U-18 on weekends during the fall and spring seasons.  Pay ranges from $20 - $55 per match.  You must attend a 16 hour course to become certified the first year and then a 6 hour recertification course each year thereafter.  There will be  certification courses in Wilson and New Bern this summer:

For clinics, there is a $60.00 registration fee and you must be at least 14 years old.  You must attend all three days and make your check payable to NCSRA.  You should check with the coordinator a week or so before the clinic to confirm it is still being held (if enough people do not registered, the State office will cancel the clinic).

All certification and recert clinics are posted at www.ncsra.org.  You must register at this website which also lists other towns hosting clinics.  It doesn't matter where you attend the clinic.  If you are properly certified and want to officiate during the fall 2007 season, send Darren an email to be added as an available referee.

NCHSAA referee.   The NCHSAA and USSF are completely separate entities.  Each requires it's own registration.  To become a NCHSAA referee, go to http://www.nchsaa.org/index.pl and click under "Officiating" and then "Online Officiating Registration".  It takes about 5 minutes to register.  You must register and send $30 (plus $21 insurance) to the NCHSAA office before August 1 (no exceptions), and then attend a mandatory NCHSAA state clinic.  There will be a state clinic at Rose High School in Greenville on July 29 from 4 p.m. to about 6 p.m.  If you can not attend the Rose High clinic, other sites for the clinics are listed on the website.  It doesn't matter which clinic you attend although it is preferable to attend the Rose clinic because we will have a local association meeting immediately thereafter.  Our local association is the called the Eastern Plains.  In August, you will take the NCHSAA exam and then be ready to officiate during the fall 2007 season.  Exam dates and details will be discussed at the Rose High state clinic.  Pay ranges from $33 to $55 per match.  Match fees were increased by $5 this year ($50 per ref for a 3 man varsity, and $45 for a 2 man JV match).  You will also pay a booking agent fee of $40 per season or $80 for the fall & spring seasons.  Once you have registered, send Darren an email to be placed on the list of available referees.  You will likely get some assignments in or close to your home town and some assignments which will require up to a 45 minute drive to the school.  The more available you are, the more matches you will receive assuming you are officiating the matches competently.

Please contact Darren if you have further questions or concerns.
